How to style your home with rugs

Rugs are a great addition to your decor that, together with other soft decoration pieces like cushions and throws, add dimension and elevate the atmosphere in your home. Choosing the right rug for your home can be a bit of a jungle with a wide variety of designs, sizes and materials. It can be a great help to consider where the rug will be placed, as different rooms and placements have different requirements for your rug.

Dining room rug

A large rug under the dining table is both practical and comfortable. The rug protects the floor against wear and tear from dining room chairs - just make sure the rug is large enough so that the chair legs won't get caught in the edge of the rug. A low pile rug is ideal for the dining room, as it's easy to clean for crumbs. Furthermore, it's practical to choose a dark or patterned rug that won't get easily stained. If you have a round dining table, you can create balance in your decor by choosing a round rug for your dining area.

Living room rug

If you have the space, choose a larger rug for the living room that helps create cosiness and a red thread throughout your sofa area. Go for a rug in soft materials that is comfortable for your feet. A shag rug is extra soft and cosy, while a low pile rug is easier to clean.

Kitchen rug

If you spend a lot of time cooking, you can make your experience more comfortable by standing on a rug. In the kitchen, a low pile rug that is easy to clean is preferable. You can also choose a washable rug, so you don't have to worry about stains in case of spills.

Bedroom rug

If you have wooden floors in your bedroom, a soft and warm rug is ideal to step on when you get out of bed. You can either place a smaller rug on either side of the bed, or a bigger rug under the bed with space to step out on each side. Choose a soft shag rug for extra comfort for your bare feet.

Children's room rug

In the children's room, the rug needs to be comfortable and inviting for play time. Choose a rug with a cute children's motive or in pretty patterns or colours for extra childish joy.

Hallway rug

Add dimension and comfort in your hallway with a long runner rug. As there's usually not so many furniture pieces in the hallway, the hallway runner can be the centerpiece of the room. Choose a hallway runner rug in a beautiful pattern and colours that express your personal style.

Entry rug

In your entry, the floor is typically more exposed to dirt and moisture, and a rug can therefore help protect the floors. A smaller rug is easy to hang outside and beat free of dirt and dust, or maybe washed. A jute rug is especially suitable for your entry, as they are durable and easy to maintain.

Outdoor rug

In JYSK, you can find a selection of rugs that can be used both inside and outside. Use an outdoor rug on your balcony or patio to create a cosy atmosphere in your lounge area, or by the patio door to avoid dragging in dirt.

Some of our rugs have a latex back, which ensures that the rug doesn't move. As an alternative, you can by a non-slip rug underlay, which is a good idea if the rug will be placed on wooden floors. This ensures that the rug stays in place and you avoid tripping over the rug.

A quick guide to rug materials

At JYSK, you can find rugs made from a variety of materials. We offer rugs made from both synthetic and natural materials.

Synthetic materials are durable and resistant to moisture and dirt. They can be made in many colours that last well, e.g. against sun damage. There are many variants of synthetic materials that all give the rug a different texture, thickness and feeling.

  • Polypropylene: A type of plastic which is extremely durable and very resistant to dirt and moisture. It's easy to keep clean, as it doesn't absorb moisture.
  • Polyester: A durable material that is resistant to dirt and stains.
  • Nylon/polyamide: An elastic and durable material. It's great at keeping its form, and the material will rise again if it has been exposed to pressure.

Natural materials are extracted from animals or plants, and are therefore more sustainable materials. Natural materials have a lively expression and some natural functions and benefits.

  • Cotton: A sustainable material that is easy to dye. It is easy to clean, as cotton rugs can often be hand or machine washed. Will quickly return to original state after being under furniture.
  • Jute: A durable material that is relatively soft and requires low maintenance. Jute rugs have a timeless and natural look.
  • Wool: A sustainable material that is warm, soft, and insulating. Wool can help regulate moisture levels in a room. The material rises again quickly after sustaining pressure. Wool rugs are fairly easy to clean from stains. If the rug is very dirty, it can often be professionally cleaned.

How to clean your rug

Rugs are often considered unpractical, but that's not necessarily the case. We recommend that you vacuum or beat your rug free from dirt regularly. If an accident happens, and the rug gets stained, they can be cleaned with a textile cleaner, hand wash, machine wash or professional dry cleaning. Always check the cleaning instructions on each individual rug.
