Add a cosy finishing touch with scatter cushions

Decorative cushions are an easy way to update your home without making big changes. A few scatter cushions can make a sofa feel more comfortable, add colour to an armchair or give your bed a more finished look. They are also easy to change when you fancy a different colour, pattern or texture.

For a simple look, choose cushions in soft, neutral colours with subtle patterns or textured fabrics. If you prefer a bit more colour, pink, green or blue scatter cushions can add a fresh touch to your room. Velvet, woven and other textured finishes can also make a sofa or bed feel more cosy.

Scatter cushions are easy to mix and match. Place larger cushions at the back and add smaller ones in front, or combine square and rectangular cushions with a bolster cushion for a more varied look. You can keep the colours similar while mixing different patterns and textures, or let one patterned cushion stand out against a simpler selection.

Start by looking at the colours already in your room. If your sofa, curtains or rug are neutral, cushions are an easy way to introduce a new colour or pattern. If you already have several colours or patterns, choose cushions that pick up one of the shades already in the room. This helps everything feel connected without needing to match perfectly.

Think about where you will use your cushions, too. Scatter cushions for sofas can make a living room feel more comfortable and inviting, while scatter cushions for beds can add an extra layer to your bedding. Small cushions are useful for armchairs, window seats and smaller spaces, while larger scatter cushions can help fill out a sofa or create a fuller look on a bed.

The shape of your cushions can make a difference as well. Square and rectangular cushions are easy to combine, while bolster cushions and round cushions can break up a row of similar shapes. Try mixing different shapes, colours and textures rather than choosing everything from the same collection.

Throw cushions are a simple way to add an extra layer of comfort to your sofa, chair or bed. You can use them alongside cushions you already own or add a few new ones when you want to change the look of a room.

Bolster cushions have a longer, rounded shape and work well with square and rectangular decorative cushions. They can be placed at the front of a bed, along a sofa or on an armchair, adding a different shape to the arrangement. A round cushion can have a similar effect and works particularly well when the rest of your cushions have more traditional shapes.

There is no need for every cushion to match. Combining a few colours and textures usually gives a more relaxed result than using the same cushion throughout. If you have a patterned sofa or bedding, try plain cushions to balance the look. With simpler furniture, patterned or textured scatter cushions can add a little more detail.

One of the best things about scatter cushions is how easy they are to change. You can use lighter colours and fresh patterns to give your home a brighter feel in spring and summer, then switch to deeper colours and softer textures when autumn and winter arrive.

They also work well with other soft furnishings. Add a throw to your sofa for extra warmth, or combine cushions with a rug to bring different colours and textures into the living room. In the bedroom, style your cushions with a bedspread for a simple update.
