Which mattress to choose: Spring or latex

Both a spring mattress and a latex mattress can give you the support your body needs and help you get a good night’s sleep. But there are some differences between a spring mattress and a latex mattress that set them apart.

A spring mattress is best known for its good, supportive comfort. It is also a flexible solution that can be used in a variety of situations and bed setups.

A spring mattress consists of a spring system, filling and a cover. The spring system allows the mattress to shape itself to your body. This creates outstanding support and a feeling of deep comfort when you lie on the spring mattress.

The spring system in a spring mattress can consist of bonell springs, which result in a firmer and more stable surface, or smaller pocket springs, which adjust themselves precisely to your body and give a deeper level of comfort.

If you're a side sleeper, it can be very pleasant to experience the deep support in the shoulder zones. If you're a back sleeper, on the other hand, you will probably feel more comfortable on a slightly firmer mattress.

At JYSK, we always recommend visiting one of our stores so you can try which mattress is more comfortable before making your purchase.

Advantages of a spring mattress

• The mattress fits bed frames, adjustable beds and continental beds.
• The spring system shapes itself to your body and provides good support.
• Thanks to the springs, the mattress distributes the pressure on your body’s support zones better than a latex mattress. The more springs, the more nuanced support.
• If you sleep on your side, a spring mattress provides good support for your shoulders and neck.
• The air circulation in a spring mattress creates a well-ventilated and healthy sleeping environment.
• Some spring mattresses can be flipped over and many models have different degrees of firmness on the top and bottom, so in principle, you get two mattresses in one.

Disadvantages of a spring mattress

• A spring mattress feels livelier than a latex mattress, so you are more likely to feel the movements of your sleeping partner.
• The springs in the mattress can make a bit of noise when you move around.

A latex mattress is a good choice if you want a mattress with a stable and supportive surface that largely maintains its shape under pressure.

A latex mattress is a foam mattress that contains a combination of natural or synthetic latex and other materials.

If you are a back sleeper, you want to avoid sinking into your mattress. It's better to lie flat so that your back does not bend. A latex mattress can really help with this. A latex mattress provides the necessary support for maintaining an ergonomic and comfortable position throughout the night.

A latex mattress can also be the right choice if your sleeping partner moves around a lot in their sleep. It is good at absorbing movement, so you’ll experience fewer disturbances caused by your partner’s tossing and turning.

We always recommend visiting one of our stores so you can try a latex mattress for yourself.

Advantages of a latex mattress

• A latex mattress supports your body without you sinking into the mattress.
• With support zones in the back and lumbar region, a latex mattress is a good choice if you sleep on your back.
• Dust mites cannot live in a latex mattress, so if you have a dust mite allergy, a latex mattress can help you get a better night’s sleep.
• A latex mattress is made of natural, breathable material so it is a good solution for those who feel warm when they sleep.
• A latex mattress is a good choice if you own, or want to own, an adjustable bed.
• The mattress can be flipped over to extend its durability and elasticity.
• The mattress fits bed frames, adjustable beds and continental beds.

Disadvantages of a latex mattress

• Side sleepers won’t get as much support for their shoulders and hips
• A latex mattress is more expensive than other types

Don’t forget the top mattress

Regardless of which mattress is right for you, it is always a good idea to supplement it with a quality mattess topper in order to optimise support and comfort
