- When can you sleep on a new mattress or mattress topper?
As a general guideline, you should wait 72 hours – three full days – after unpacking before sleeping on your new mattress or mattress topper. This allows rolled or compressed products time to expand and regain their intended shape, while giving any initial manufacturing odour time to dissipate. Remove the packaging promptly and air the product in a well-ventilated room.
Some mattresses and mattress toppers are rolled or compressed for easier transport. After unpacking, they need time to expand and regain their intended shape
“We recommend allowing a new mattress or mattress topper to air out for 72 hours after unpacking. This gives rolled or compressed products time to settle and allows any initial manufacturing odour to fade.”
– Berna B. Larsen, Category Manager for mattresses, JYSK
To help any initial odour dissipate, remove the packaging right away and leave the product in a well-ventilated room.
Technically, yes, you can sleep on your new mattress or mattress topper before the recommended 72-hour waiting period. However, mattresses and mattress toppers that are rolled or compressed may need time to fully expand and regain their intended shape.
Allowing the product to air out and expand for up to 72 hours can help ensure you experience the comfort and support it’s designed to provide. Following the recommended unpacking instructions can also help us assess any product issues more accurately should you need assistance after you’ve received and unpacked your mattress or mattress topper.
To help your new mattress or mattress topper along to get it ready for sleeping, we recommend following these steps to help it regain its shape:
A new mattress or mattress topper may have a distinctive smell when first unpacked. This manufacturing odour is associated with the materials used in the product, including foam types such as memory foam, and can be more noticeable after the product has been sealed in its packaging during transport. The smell is temporary and should gradually fade as the product airs out.
After allowing your new mattress or mattress topper to air out for the recommended 72 hours, any remaining manufacturing odour is harmless. The smell may take longer than 72 hours to disappear completely, but it should gradually fade as the product continues to air out.
If you can still notice a slight smell after the initial airing period, continue to ventilate the room. If the odour from your new JYSK mattress or mattress topper is unusually strong, causes irritation or persists without improving, you’re always welcome to contact our customer service for advice.
