Different spring types in mattresses explained: Find the right support

Not all spring mattresses are built the same. The spring layer forms the core of a spring mattress and plays a major role in how supportive, comfortable and responsive it feels. Different spring types offer different benefits, from pressure relief to firm, even support. Use this quick guide to compare the most common spring types used in spring mattresses and find the right support for your needs.

While every spring mattress contains a spring layer, the springs themselves can be constructed in different ways. Some use individually wrapped springs that respond independently to movement, while others use interconnected springs that provide firmer, more even support.

The design of the spring layer affects how the mattress supports your body, relieves pressure and responds to movement, ultimately influencing your overall sleeping comfort.

For example, compared with interconnected bonell springs that create a more uniform support surface, pocket springs respond independently to movement, providing better pressure relief and more targeted support. Multi-pocket springs build on the pocket spring design by using a greater number of smaller springs, allowing the mattress to adapt even more precisely to your body's contours.

While all spring mattresses are designed to support your body, different spring constructions vary in how they respond to movement, distribute pressure and isolate motion. The table below compares the key benefits and design of the most common spring types used in JYSK spring mattresses.

No spring type is universally better than another. The right choice depends on the type of support and comfort you prefer. If you prefer flexible support that adapts to your body's contours and helps relieve pressure, a pocket spring mattress is a good choice. Multi-pocket and adaptive pocket springs build on this design to provide even more precise or consistent support.

If you prefer firmer, more even support across the entire sleeping surface, an interconnected spring system such as bonell may better suit your preferences.

Other spring technologies combine different spring constructions to create unique comfort characteristics. For example, FoamTop pocket springs combine individually wrapped pocket springs with integrated foam.

Spring count can influence how a mattress feels, but a higher number of springs does not automatically mean a better mattress. The type of spring, its design and how it works together with the mattress's comfort layers all play an important role in determining support and comfort.

Rather than focusing on spring count alone, consider the overall mattress construction and choose the spring system that best matches your sleeping preferences.

Mattress springs are only part of the mattress

The spring layer plays a major role in how supportive and responsive a spring mattress feels, but it is only one part of the overall sleeping experience. The interaction between comfort zones and comfort layers, foam and other mattress materials also influence pressure relief, comfort and the overall feel of the mattress.

A top mattress can further adjust the feel of your bed with materials that offer additional benefits, such as pressure relief, temperature regulation or cooling properties. To learn more, read our guide to different mattress foam types and explore our blog post about mattress topper materials.
