Guide: Choice of home office chair
When shopping for a new office chair, there are several things to consider: What kind of material do you prefer? What level of back support do you want? Do you need a dedicated office chair, or one that complements your home décor? In this blog post, we guide you through some of the different options available at JYSK.

1. Materials used for office chairs
Office chairs typically have a seat and a back made from mesh, (faux) leather, or fabric. Each type has its benefits:
(Faux) leather
Office chairs made of leather or faux leather are typically soft and provide a comfortable seat. The cover is strong and durable, but can feel warm over time. It is easy to clean with a damp cloth (always check the manufacturer’s instructions first).
Mesh office chairs
Mesh is a lightweight material with a net-like structure. The breathable fabric allows air to circulate, which makes a mesh office chair comfortable – especially during warm periods.
Fabric office chairs
Fabric office chairs are soft and provide optimal seating comfort. They are available in different styles and colours, allowing you to easily find one that complements your home décor.
2. Low or high back?
Office chairs are available with either a low or a high back – and some even have a headrest. While a high-back office chair might seem like the more comfortable choice, there are also benefits to a low-back version.
Benefits of office chairs with high backs
An office chair with a high back provides support for your back and takes the strain off your neck and shoulders. It is ideal if you want both flexibility and comfort, and you can safely lean back and take a moment to reflect during the workday.
A headrest offers even better support if you are seated for longer periods, as it provides relief for your neck muscles.
Benefits of low-back office chairs
Office chairs with low backs are among the most popular models for the home and workplace. This type of office chair is more compact, making it suitable for smaller spaces. Office chairs with low backs are versatile and relatively easy to fit into your existing interior design.
3. Adjustable office chairs
An adjustable office chair with an advanced ergonomic function lets you adjust both height, seat, armrests, and back. If you suffer from back pain or a sore neck, an ergonomic office chair can be a good choice. You can adjust it to your height, body type, and preferences in general, and during the workday, a tilt function can help you change position and relax your back.
Seat height
The seat height of an office chair is ideal when both feet are placed flat on the floor and your knees are at a 90-degree angle.
Seat depth
Sit as far back in the office chair as possible. Approximately 2/3 of your thighs should be supported by the seat of the chair.
Seat angle
You can improve your posture by tilting the seat of the chair slightly forward so your hips are slightly higher than your knees.
The above tips are general guidelines. Always reach out to a healthcare professional or ergonomic specialist if you have any questions regarding the ideal sitting position.
Gaming chairs
Gaming chairs are typically highly adjustable, to help gamers take care of their physiology during long gaming sessions. Many gaming chairs offer features such as reclinable backrest, stepless tilt and tilt lock – features that help you sit comfortably for longer.

4. Armrests or no armrests?
Armrests take up a little extra room but are all worth it. They can provide you with a more relaxed position and reduce the strain on your arms and hands as well as your shoulders and neck. However, make sure that the armrests do not prevent you from reaching the desk.

An office chair without armrests gives you more freedom of movement for your arms and shoulders. You don’t have to “target” it from a specific angle, and it typically takes up a little less space than one with armrests.
1-, 2- or 3-dimensional adjustment
Armrests can be labelled “1D”, “2D”, or “3D”, depending on how many dimensions they move in. Some can only be up and down, others can rotate or move from side to side, while some can be adjusted in all three dimensions, precisely to fit your needs.
5. Safety casters
All office chairs at JYSK are equipped with safety casters. These casters have a pressure-sensitive brake mechanism, allowing free chair movement when you are seated, while locking automatically when the chair is not in use.
6. Office chair style
In a room dedicated to your workspace, you might prioritise getting a classic office chair with great functionality. You can go all in and get an executive office chair to sit – and feel – like a boss.
A gaming chair is also a good choice for you if you put comfort first. With a high level of lumbar, back and neck support, and several ways to adjust it precisely to suit your body, a gaming chair will surely keep you comfortable throughout the workday.
If you don’t have a dedicated office room but work from the living room, kitchen, or elsewhere in your home, you might prefer a more stylish office chair with a little less of an office look. You might even opt for an office chair that matches or complements your dining furniture. This will come in handy when you have more guests than dining chairs.
