1. Make shelter

If you want to make dwelling on the balcony or patio during autumn or winter a pleasant experience, first plant some trees to make shelter. If it is not the season for gardening, use artificial trees, or plants in tall planter boxes.

2. Stay warm

Make sure you have a few warm throws handy and place a rug on the floor. Rugs add an extra layer of insulation to the floor, that keeps the cold from seeping up.

3. Make it cosy

String lights and lanterns are an essential part of your winter décor. Don’t just use them at Christmas light them as soon as it gets darker and colder and enjoy the cosy sight from your living room.

4. Take your cooking outside

When you cook outside, you don’t need to worry about cooking fumes and greasy stains and all your fresh herbs are right there for you to use. Light the BBQ and prepare a meal for family or friends. Use food-safe plastic containers for your ingredients and baskets for the utensils that you need at hand, so you don’t have to run back and forth to the kitchen.

5. Make room for more

The balcony or patio is a practical place for storage of things that you don’t have room for indoors. Make sure that the storage solution that you choose is both waterproof and frostproof to protect your belongings.

6. Hang your laundry to dry

If your balcony or patio is covered it is ideal for drying your laundry. It might take longer than in the warmer parts of the year, but it is the combination of heat, humidity and airflow that dries the clothes. This means that even if it is not very warm, a low humidity and a high airflow can dry your laundry.
